Nobody thinks about their electrical panel until something goes wrong. It sits in a basement or garage, doing its job quietly, until a breaker starts tripping every time the microwave and the hair dryer run at the same time. By then, most homeowners are already asking the right question: is this a small fix, or does the whole panel need to go?
The honest answer is that it depends on what’s actually happening in the panel, not just how old it looks. A panel can be twenty years old and perfectly fine. Another can be five years old and already undersized for the home it’s serving. The signs below are what a licensed electrician actually looks for, not guesswork.
Signs your panel may need an upgrade
A few patterns show up again and again in homes that end up needing panel work.
Breakers trip regularly, even with normal use. An occasional trip during a power surge is normal. Breakers tripping every time you run the dishwasher and a hair dryer at once means the panel is being asked to do more than it’s built for.
The panel feels warm to the touch, or you see discoloration. Heat at the panel almost always means a loose connection or an overloaded circuit. This is one of the few signs on this list that’s worth calling about the same day you notice it, not scheduling for later in the month.
You smell a faint burning odor near the panel or an outlet. Electrical components don’t produce a burning smell under normal operation. If you notice one, shut off power to that area if it’s safe to do so and call a licensed electrician right away.
You’re still on a fuse box, or 60 to 100 amp service. Homes built before the 1990s were often wired for far less power than a modern household uses. A 60 amp fuse box was standard decades ago; most new homes today run 200 amp service.
You’re planning an addition, an EV charger, or a workshop. Adding meaningful new electrical load to a panel that’s already near capacity is one of the most common reasons homeowners call for a panel upgrade, and it’s far easier to plan ahead of time than to troubleshoot after the fact.
Flickering or dimming lights, especially when appliances kick on. This can point to a loose connection at the panel or a circuit carrying more than it should, both of which a licensed electrician can diagnose.
Why panel capacity matters more than it used to
The average home today runs a lot more than it did when many panels currently in service were installed. Central air conditioning, electric ranges, larger refrigerators, home offices with multiple monitors, and increasingly, EV chargers, all draw meaningfully more power than the appliance mix a 100 amp panel was designed around.
None of that means every older home needs an immediate upgrade. Plenty of 100 amp panels are still doing their job well in smaller homes with modest electrical demand. The point isn’t age for its own sake. It’s whether the panel can actually support what the home is asking it to do, now and over the next several years, without being run at its limit constantly.

Most homeowners picture a panel upgrade as a bigger, vaguer version of swapping an outlet. In practice, it’s a specific, well-defined process, and knowing what it involves makes the decision easier.
It starts with a load calculation, not a guess. A licensed electrician looks at your home’s square footage, major appliances, HVAC system, and anything you’re planning to add, like an EV charger or a workshop, and calculates the actual amperage your home needs now and in the near future. That number determines whether you need 150 amp, 200 amp, or larger service, not a default assumption.
From there, the work itself usually takes a single day for a straightforward residential upgrade, though older homes with more rework involved can take longer. Your utility company briefly disconnects power to the home while the new panel, breakers, and any required grounding or bonding updates are installed. A permit is pulled before work begins, and a local inspector reviews the completed installation afterward, which is a legal requirement in Minnesota, not an optional step.
The end result is a documented, code-compliant panel sized correctly for your home, with a permit and inspection record on file, not just a bigger box on the wall.
The safety and insurance angle
An overloaded or failing panel isn’t just an inconvenience. According to the National Fire Protection Association, home electrical fires cause an estimated 51,000 fires, nearly 500 deaths, more than 1,400 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage every year, and electrical distribution equipment is a leading cause.
Some older panel brands add another layer to this. Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels, both common in homes built several decades ago, have a well-documented history of breakers that fail to trip during an overload, the exact scenario a breaker exists to prevent. Some insurance companies are aware of this and will flag these panel types during underwriting.
Why this is licensed electrician work, not a weekend project
A panel sits at the center of a home’s entire electrical system, so mistakes here don’t stay contained to one outlet or one room. Two homes on the same street can need very different scopes of work depending on their existing wiring and how the original panel was installed.
